Creating Safe Spaces for Youth in Nepal
To celebrate International Youth Day, IFES’ civil society partner Association of Youth Organizations Nepal conducted two campaign events around the 2018 theme, “Safe Spaces for Youth,” advocating for safe spaces where young people can gather, engage in activities reflecting their diverse needs and interests, participate in decision-making processes and freely express themselves.

New Report on Campaign Finance Monitoring in Nepal
IFES' civil society partner Samuhik Abhiyan conducted a campaign finance monitoring mission during Nepal’s December 2017 House of Representatives elections. With the launch of their report on May 18, 2018, Samuhik Abhiyan revealed that over half of candidates monitored exceeded the legal spending limits.

Papua New Guinea Develops Strategic Plan Ahead of 2022 National Election
The Papua New Guinea Electoral Commission (PNGEC), with the support of IFES, conducted its strategic planning process from October 2017 to March 2018 with the aim of developing its 2018-2022 Corporate Plan. The plan will guide the PNGEC over the next five years through its preparation for the 2022 national election and implementation of long-term civic education, inclusion and legal reform initiatives.

A Year of Elections in Nepal: Implementing a Federal and Inclusive Constitution
In 2017, record numbers of Nepali voters turned out to vote in local, provincial and national level elections to elect 35,000 Local Council representatives, including mayors and deputy mayors, 550 Provincial Assembly representatives, and 275 House of Representatives members. As envisioned by the 2015 Constitution, these elections completed Nepal’s transition from highly centralized monarchy to a federal republic with powers devolved from the center to newly established provincial and local governments.

Nepali Youth Speak Out Against Violence Against Women
IFES works closely with the Association of Youth Organizations Nepal (AYON), a national network of youth-led organizations. AYON recently created a “I Vote Because” campaign and facilitated a mock poll event. Advancing Disability Rights in Southeast Asia through Regional Network of Advocates
In 2011, IFES established the General Election Network for Disability Access (AGENDA) across Southeast Asia. A creative partnership between disabled persons’ organizations (DPOs) and election-focused civil society organizations, AGENDA serves as a forum to improve access to political and electoral opportunities for persons with disabilities by increasing public awareness and elevating advocacy efforts that call for change.

Photo Gallery: Voters in 32 Districts Cast Votes in Nepal’s Historic Elections
On November 26, 2017, Nepal held the first phase of its first national and state-level legislature elections since the promulgation of its new constitution on September 20, 2015. Voters headed to one of 2,919 polling locations across 32 districts in the hill and mountain regions of Nepal, with the remaining 45 districts preparing to vote on December 7. These districts represented 3,191,945 of the 15,427,938 total registered voters. These elections mark an important step in Nepal’s transition to a federal state.
