Iyo Menya "If Only I Had Known"
Starting at the end of May and through early September, Burundi will hold its first set of elections since all rebel movements laid down their arms and officially ended Burundi’s long civil war. “If Only I Had Known,” (“Iyo Menya”) produced by New Generation and IFES, with the support of USAID and the Studio RAM recounts the firsthand stories of former youth combatants of Burundi’s long civil war.

Burundi Launches First-ever Election Violence Monitoring System
Amatora Mu Mahoro (Elections in Peace), Burundi's first-ever nationwide election violence prevention system, launches today in the capital, Bujumbura. The system identifies areas susceptible to electoral violence as well as successful peace initiatives around the country. It aims to support appropriate responses and promote the peaceful holding of Burundi's 2010 elections, the first since all rebel movements laid down their arms and officially ended Burundi's long civil war.

BRIDGE Training in Burundi
IFES-Burundi held the second in a series of BRIDGE trainings in Rutana, Burundi from April 6-9. The event brought together twenty-five members of Burundi's national and provincial electoral commission to explore topics critical to effectively prevent and manage electoral disputes. Burundi is scheduled to have communal, presidential, legislative and local elections between May and September 2010.

Democracy and Election in Africa: Almami Cyllah's Testimony to Congress
On Wednesday, March 24, 2010, Almami Cyllah, IFES regional director for Africa, testified before the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health on democracy in the African continent. Mr. Cyllah gave an overview of Africa's history with elections and how democracy fits into the continent's overall advancement. He also gave a number of important recommendations for how the United States and the international community can help Africa prosper by strengthening its democratic institutions. Use of Administrative Resources for Election Campaign in Georgia - 1st Report
There has been an unprecedented increase in the funding allocated to local government entities in
Georgia’s state budget ahead of the 2010 local elections. The total transfers to local government bodies
in the state budget exceed the previous year’s figure by 34%. At the same time, there has been a
considerable increase in the number of employees in the Tbilisi Mayor’s Office and in the regional
administrative bodies. The resulting growth of salary funds is at odds with President Saakashvili’s
policy of reducing bureaucracy costs. Those who oppose this approach have suggested that state money
is being used to employ the people who are to participate in the ruling party’s election campaign.
