Haythem Srihi: From H4D Participant to Municipal Councilor
IFES launched an original initiative called Hack4Democracy (H4D), a combination of democracy camps and hackathons which uses technology to engage Tunisian youth in civic activism. At just 24 years old, Haythem Srihi is a member of the H4D finale’s winning team and a newly elected municipal councilor from the city of Jammel. Haythem’s success in both the H4D competition and in the May 6 municipal elections serves as a prime example of what Tunisian youth can achieve when they are given the tools to prosper and have the drive to overcome societal barriers.

Promoting Voting Rights for Persons with Disabilities in Sri Lanka
In February 2018, Sri Lanka held a local government election to elect over 8,000 representatives under a new mixed-member proportional representation system. IFES worked with the Election Commission of Sri Lanka and civil society partners to conduct targeted voter education initiatives for voters with disabilities ahead of the elections.

New Documentary Highlights Disability Rights Advocacy in Libya
On February 7, IFES launched a documentary that highlights successful disability rights advocacy in Libya and the “Rights Unite” campaign. The documentary – which was made possible through the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) – explores how the Election Access Working Group, which was established with the support of IFES and USAID in 2013, began as a fragmented group of disability rights advocates and flourished as a successful advocacy group.

Disability Rights and Election Observation: Increasing Access to the Political Process
IFES Senior Access and Inclusion Specialist Virginia Atkinson, Senior Inclusion Officer Rebecca Aaberg, and Senior Global Electoral Adviser Staffan Darnolf contributed an article on "Disability Rights and Election Observation: Increasing Access to the Political Process," to Volume 35 of the Nordic Journal of Human Rights. Creating a Policy Platform to Advocate for Rights of Kenyan Women with Disabilities
Women with disabilities often face barriers such as multiple forms of discrimination and lack access to decision-making processes as a result of their intersectional identities. IFES and Women Challenged to Challenge (WCC), a disabled people’s organization (DPO) run by women in Kenya, are implementing the “Power to Persuade: Empowering Women with Disabilities to Influence Public Policy” initiative, with support from Global Affairs Canada, to amplify the voices of Kenyan women with disabilities to participate in political life.

Advancing Disability Rights in Southeast Asia through Regional Network of Advocates
In 2011, IFES established the General Election Network for Disability Access (AGENDA) across Southeast Asia. A creative partnership between disabled persons’ organizations (DPOs) and election-focused civil society organizations, AGENDA serves as a forum to improve access to political and electoral opportunities for persons with disabilities by increasing public awareness and elevating advocacy efforts that call for change.

Timor-Leste Parliamentary Elections, July 2017: Disability Access Monitoring
For Timor-Leste's 2017 presidential and parliamentary elections, IFES supported local disabled people’s organization Ra’es Hadomi Timor Oan (RHTO) to conduct disability access monitoring. For the parliamentary elections, RHTO deployed access monitors in every municipality and deployed monitors in the capital city for the presidential election. International Day of Persons with Disabilities
The annual International Day of Persons with Disabilities, held on December 3, commemorates the human rights of persons with disabilities. For 30 years, IFES has worked to support the political rights of women and men with disabilities, recognizing that all people should have an equal opportunity to contribute their voice within the political life of their communities. In 2017, IFES collaborated with disabled people’s organizations (DPOs) to design new tools and approaches to empower people with disabilities to participate in political life.

New Program Will Engage Young Dominican Leaders with Disabilities
IFES announces its new program, in partnership with local disabled people’s organization Disability Alliance for Our Rights, “Promoting the Political Leadership of Youth with Disabilities in the Dominican Republic.” The program, made possible through the support of the United States Agency for International Development Disability Fund, will empower young persons with disabilities to make a difference in their communities by taking a more active role in political life.
