Giving Voice to the Vote
Having a say in the way we are governed is a human right, yet for many around the world there are many obstacles to exercising this right. IFES is dedicated to helping societies transcend the barriers to complete enfranchisement, which include election violence and discrimination against minorities. This short audio slideshow highlights some of the struggles developing and developed democracies face and what IFES is doing to help.

Key Findings: IFES Indonesia Electoral Survey 2010
In August 2010, IFES contracted Polling Center of Jakarta to conduct a nationwide public opinion survey with a sample size of 2,500. Interviews were conducted in all 33 provinces and the survey is nationally representative of all voting-age individuals across Indonesia. The survey focused on the electoral process and electoral institutions in the country but also addresses general socio-economic issue and attitudes toward democracy and political participation. A summary of key finding from the survey is provided below. Some comparative data from an IFES 2008 survey is also cited. The sample size for that survey was also 2,500 and was nationally representative of all voting-age individuals across Indonesia. The margin of error for a survey of this size is plus/minus 2%.

Top Elections NGO Releases Publication on the Use of Technology in Elections
As democracies around the world increasingly use technology in their electoral processes, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) has released a new publication, Direct Democracy: Progress and Pitfalls of Election Technology. The book sheds light on the benefits and possible limitations of technology in elections, and most importantly, how technology can be used most effectively.

As democracies around the world increasingly use technology in their electoral processes, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) has released a publication, Direct Democracy: Progress and Pitfalls of Election Technology that sheds light into the benefits and limitations of technology in elections. The book, which is being released on September 30, is composed of case studies from around the world that show the experience countries have had with electoral technology so far. The book will be available for purchase on www.ifes.org.

IFES Supports Civil Society Organizations in Advance of the 2010 People’s Assembly Elections in Egypt
IFES is supporting civil society organizations conducting voter education activities in advance of the 2010 People’s Assembly Elections in Egypt. During the month of August, IFES co-sponsored a workshop with the Al Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies for civil society organizations to discuss women’s political participation. In the month of April, IFES hosted a conference in partnership with the Cairo University’s Faculty of Economics and Political Science and NAS, an NGO that supports persons with disabilities, on access to electoral processes for persons with disabilities. The conference emphasized the importance of political participation among all members of society. It was attended by more than 60 representatives of civil society organizations from across Egypt.

Nigeria: Debating a New Voters Register Four Months before Election Day
Earlier this year, Nigeria held the world’s attention with the illness and subsequent death of President Umaru Yar'Adua. After his passing, Vice President Goodluck Jonathan assumed the presidency. In January 2011, the tenure of the current presidency will expire and Nigeria will hold presidential elections to elect the country’s next leader.
