Why an Intersectional Approach to Gender Quotas is a Must: An Example from Nepal
IFES recently conducted a Violence Against Women in Elections (VAWIE) Assessment in Nepal to analyze the potential challenges that create and exacerbate incidents of violence against women in elections, including the local-level elections in May and June. Intersectionality surfaced during discussions about the status of women, and its challenges surfaced in discussions on gender quotas.

The Effect of Violence on Women’s Electoral and Political Participation in Bangladesh
Women in Bangladesh are uniquely impacted by pervasive violence in the country’s electoral process. To explore the effect of electoral violence on women’s participation, IFES convened seven focus groups of Bangladeshi women in 2013 and 2015 to discuss electoral violence they have experienced in the home and public sphere. The findings seek to contribute to a more holistic and human-centered approach to electoral security that covers all phases and activities of the electoral process and adheres to the spirit of international standards and norms governing elections.

Working with Women Leaders and their Allies for Equality
On International Women’s Day, and every day, we honor and support the tireless efforts of women's rights advocates. One of the ways these women leaders affect change is by working with and building partnerships with male allies. With support from the U.S. Agency for International Development, IFES has developed the Male Allies for Leadership Equality (MALE) training module, an addendum to IFES’ women’s leadership training curriculum.

IFES Trains NEC Gender Section in Liberia on Disability Rights
With the support of the United States Agency for International Development, IFES has worked closely with the National Elections Commission of Liberia (NEC) over the past several years to build its capacity to conduct credible and inclusive elections. As part of this work, IFES is providing the NEC Gender Section with technical support on the inclusion of marginalized groups, such as persons with disabilities and women.
