In Nigeria, persons with disabilities, who are often the poorest of the poor, are frequently overlooked and struggle to have a voice in society.

Pakistan Electoral Integrity Assessment
In November 2013, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) conducted a comprehensive electoral integrity assessment in Pakistan, in cooperation with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and with funding support from the European Union (EU), the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) and Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD). The assessment methodology used in that effort differentiates between malpractice, fraud and systemic manipulation. These are important distinctions for understanding the vulnerabilities in the Pakistan election environment, which continues to experience challenges with malpractice, fraud allegations and a need for greater public trust.

Election Commission of Pakistan Launches its Second Five-Year Strategic Plan (2014-2018)
Outlining 162 objectives grouped under 13 broader goals, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) unveiled its Second Five-Year Strategic Plan (2014-2018) during a press conference in Islamabad on June 5, 2014. The new plan comes a year after the successful 2013 General Elections, which marked the first time in Pakistan’s history that one democratically elected government completed its full term and handed power over to another democratically elected government.

Venezuelan Opposition Leader to Receive 2014 IFES Democracy Award
The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) will honor Venezuelan opposition leader and Congresswoman Maria Corina Machado with its 2014 Charles T. Manatt Democracy Award. Machado has been the target of numerous unproven accusations by the Venezuelan government and death threats since calling on citizens to publically demonstrate against President Nicolas Maduro.

So much of the conversation in Washington and in the media on Africa tends to focus on the violent and tragic events transpiring on the continent. And while there is much work to be done by African States, their citizens and the international community to advance human rights and democracy, the work that is being done by inspiring figures all over Africa is often overlooked. Marie-Paule Kodjo, a dogged women’s rights advocate from Côte d’Ivoire, is one such figure. Her story and life’s work evidence many of the challenges women face throughout Africa, yet offers a hopeful prospect for the advancement of their rights.

Q&A with IFES Consultant Carlos Hinojosa: Living Proof that “No One Ever Leaves IFES”
Carlos Hinojosa joined the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) in 2002, supporting rule of law efforts on a number of regional research projects. He quickly developed interest in IFES’ technical assistance to election management bodies and became a Program Assistant for Asia and the Americas, participating in the design, management and implementation of programs. In 2008, he took on the responsibility to manage the Latin America division. He became a consultant in 2009, and now assists IFES with the implementation of programs with the State Elections Commission of Puerto Rico.
