Stunts and Races for Gender Equality
On April 4-5, the IFES-supported Journalists Network for Gender Equality (JNGE) conducted a public outreach campaign titled, “We Need Women in Politics! Vote for Women!” A gender-themed arts and crafts exhibition was held in Telavi, followed by a gender-themed auto rally that gathered over 3,000 attendees, including the Governor of Kakheti and the head of Telavi’s municipality. Six women and 16 men racers participated in the event, which highlighted the importance of gender equality with an innovative twist.

Indonesia’s April 2014 Legislative Elections
On April 9th, the world's fourth most populous nation held its fourth legislative elections since returning to democracy in 1999. Indonesia's colorful elections are the largest and most complex single day election event in the world. More than 70 percent of the 187 million registered voters cast more than half a billion ballots in nearly half a million polling stations on more than 8,000 inhabited islands. Balloting started after dawn and election officials had completed the counting process at the polling station level long before dusk, but the lengthy aggregation process means that official results will not be known until more than a month after the elections, providing a tense period for more than 200,000 candidates as fewer than ten percent of them will win.

IFES Holds Post-Election Evaluation and Institutional Modernization Workshops in Honduras
Once and for all, the November 2013 general elections in Honduras closed a significantly difficult chapter in the country’s history. After more than four years of holding its breath, wandering in a sort of purgatory, Honduras was able to fully regain its democratic footing. In the process, the country’s political landscape experienced deep changes; no longer is Honduras a two-party country, but rather a multi-party democracy with a promising future for political diversity. Indeed, Honduran democracy has not only been fully restored, it has also evolved.

A Rights-Based Approach to Electoral Security
In India, Maoist rebels killed 14 people in attacks in Chhattisgarh state as part of a campaign of violence aimed at disrupting the ongoing five-week national election in the world’s most populous democracy. Similarly, in the days leading up to the April 5 presidential election in Afghanistan, the Taliban unleashed a campaign of violence to discredit the electoral process and keep voters from the polls. Many hope this election will be known for delivering the first peaceful transfer of power in the country’s history.

Manual on Disability and Elections
A new publication by the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI), Equal Access: How to Include Persons with Disabilities in Elections and Political Processes, provides governments, civil society and the donor community the requisite tools and knowledge to promote the participation of persons with disabilities in elections and political processes. It has been peer reviewed by twelve experts from the disability community, election practitioners and academia.

IFES Alum Reflects on IFES Experiences
From 2007 to 2013 Lauren Serpe designed and analyzed a variety of national surveys and focus group public opinion research projects at IFES. She also contributed to monitoring and evaluation at IFES, including M&E trainings, indicator development and pre/post evaluations. During her time at IFES, her work spanned more than 18 countries in all major regions, including field experience in 10 countries.
