Women’s Leadership Training in the Maldives
From February 10-12, 2015, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) conducted a Women’s Leadership Training in the Maldives for 28 female representatives from each of the country’s four main political parties; gender focal points at various government offices; and female managers from government bodies as well as the private sector. The training – informed by a needs assessment conducted in the weeks prior to the event – provided participants with a rare opportunity for women to come together across political party lines; learn about domestic violence laws in the Maldives; and build a strong women’s network.

IFES Disability Rights Programming Receives Innovative Practice Awards
On February 25, 2015, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems’ (IFES) disability rights programming received two Innovative Practice Awards from the Zero Project at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in Vienna. IFES’ global approach to inclusion was highlighted along with a specific accolade for IFES Nepal’s work to include people with disabilities in local governance structures. Virginia Atkinson, IFES Access and Inclusion Specialist, and Suraj Sigdel, IFES Nepal Project Officer, accepted the awards.

IFES Board Director Irena Hadžiabdić Discusses Her Career
On March 3, 2015, staff from the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) met with one of IFES’ newest Board Directors, Irena Hadžiabdić, for a brief introduction to her career and to gain insights into how to build a career in election management and administration. IFES President and CEO Bill Sweeney introduced Hadžiabdić, a former IFES employee who previously served as the first female Chair of the Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) Central Election Commission (CEC) and currently is the only female member of the Commission. “Irena Hadžiabdić is a pioneer and a woman leader in global election administration,” Sweeney added.

Women in Power and Decision-Making
In commemoration of International Women’s Day on March 8 and the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) hosted a Capitol Hill breakfast briefing on “Women in Power and Decision-Making.” Panelists sought to explore the global role of gender, leadership, and decision-making in peace-building and military operations, as well as the practical impact of the Beijing Platform in the Middle East, Africa, and south Caucasus.
