Political Finance and Gender Equality
Throughout the world, women and men have different opportunities to participate in the political sphere. This is particularly true when it comes to participation as candidates and elected officials in electoral processes. There are many factors that contribute to existing gender inequalities in politics. While political finance is an important instrument for achieving gender equality in politics, the ongoing debates about political finance rarely consider the impact of money on the level of representation of both men and women in elected offices.

Indonesians Elect a new President
On July 22, 2014 at 9:10 p.m. the General Election Commission of Indonesia (Komisi Pemilihan Umum, KPU) declared Joko Widodo and Jusuf Kalla winners of the July 9, 2014 presidential election. Of the 135 million votes cast Jokowi received 71 million, taking 53.15% of the valid votes and winning by a 6.3% margin.

IFES President Hosted an Exchange of Ideas at YALI Summit
U.S. President Barack Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) brings together 500 of sub-Saharan Africa’s most promising young leaders between the ages of 25 to 35. Bill Sweeney, President and CEO of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), had the opportunity to moderate a panel on Coalition Building in the Public Interest for the YALI Summit. The panel included Amb. Mark Green, President of the International Republican Institute, Dr. Christopher Fomunyah from the National Democratic Institute and Ilwad Elman, Washington Fellow and Director of Programs and Development for the Elman Peace and Human Rights Center in Somalia.

IFES Announces U.S. Recipients of 2014 Democracy Awards
The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) will honor Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) with its 2014 Charles T. Manatt Democracy Awards. The Fifth Annual Charles T. Manatt Democracy Awards ceremony will be co-chaired by IFES Board Director R. Scott Pastrick and Counsel Randal C. Teague.

Roundtable held in Cairo on New Disability and Elections BRIDGE Module
The International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) organized a roundtable in Cairo, Egypt as part of the development of the Building Resources in Democracy, Governance, and Elections (BRIDGE) training program. The new disability rights module is being developed along with IFES teams in Haiti and Indonesia. The session focused on identifying key issues regarding inclusion of people with disabilities in the electoral process. Participants from various disabled persons’ organizations (DPOs) in Egypt discussed ideas with IFES staff and curriculum developers.

IFES President Visits Medan, Indonesia, to Support Women’s Leadership Program
Following Indonesia’s July 9 presidential election, IFES President and CEO Bill Sweeney travelled to Medan in North Sumatra to meet with some of the participants of IFES’ women’s leadership program. The program, implemented in partnership with the Center for Political Studies, Department of Political Science (Puskapol) at the University of Indonesia, aims to address the lack of representation in the field of electoral administration in Indonesia and prepare women to serve in different positions in electoral administration.
